Positive Behaviour Support Training Packages

Everybody does what they do for a reason. This phrase sums up the simple philosophy behind positive behaviour support. A belief that for each person, the behaviours they present are communication and serve a purpose, regardless of how challenging they might be for a support system to respond to. Positive Behaviour Support is a systematic approach to understand, support and encourage long term behaviour change in individuals and organisations. PBS uses a system of assessment and interventions to build on an individual’s strengths and is strongly rooted in person centered practice. While one of the outcomes of a positive behaviour support framework is a reduction in incidents of behaviours of concern, the focus is strongly on improving the individual’s quality of life.

Lancaster Consulting has been providing positive behaviour assessments drawing on their experience with the methodology of the Institute for Applied Behaviour Analysis (IABA) for well over a decade. Using significant personal experiences in the field, Lancaster Consulting has designed a three day training package to assist staff, teachers and families to develop the skills and, more importantly the understanding and attitudes, necessary to create a culture of positive behaviour support.

Training Packages for Autism Spectrum Disorders

Lancaster Consulting has developed “The Three Windows”, a framework for understanding, assessing and supporting individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). This framework views ASD as three interplaying disorders and allows for a comprehensive and holistic appraisal of an individual’s unique needs and the development of appropriate person directed supports.

Using this framework as a base, Lancaster Consulting has been offering introductory ASD courses to direct care staff for over seven years. These trainings weave a selection of concrete experiences, self-reflection, collective distilling of knowledge and frameworks for active testing of new knowledge and ideas to provide a solid foundation for enhanced person centred practice.

Person Centred Active Support

Person Centred Active Support or PCAS arose in the UK in the 1960s as part of the broader person-centred movement which also encapsulates Positive Behaviour Support and Person-Centred Planning. It focuses on providing a framework of support which actively engages individuals in their lives. Using four guiding principles, PCAS aims to improve people’s quality of life.

This course provides participants with a solid introduction to the philosophy and practices of Person Centred Active Support. Areas covered:

  • history, rationale, values and principles that underscore PCAS
  • role PCAS plays in increasing Quality of Life for all individuals and in the complex space
  • development of staff understanding and practical applications of the four underpinning
  • principles of PCAS
  • applying these principles within the work setting
  • the challenge of implementing these consistently across a team

Making Action Plans (MAPs)

Making Action Plans is a tool developed by Jack Pearpoint, Marsha Forest and John O’Brien (2007) to draw teams together around an individual. It is a facilitation tool, which in the authors words, was designed as “healing tools for people and for organisations.” It enables an individual and their circle of support to come to a common understanding of that person’s journey, dream together of a positive future and map out the practical daily steps which will move them in the direction of their vision. While this tool is applicable across situations, it is particularly powerful in transforming a person’s story where the story has become part of their disability and starting to pull together fractured teams.

Team building and development

Any plan is only as good as the team that is implementing it. Drawing on the work of Meredith Belbin and Ray Maclean (Leading Teams), Lancaster Consulting has developed an interactive workshop to assist teams to evaluate their effectiveness, develop a collective vision and then root that vision in defined, measurable behaviours. Teams are facilitated to identify the key principles that drive their practice and then develop the practical tools to maintain their accountability to those principles. This methodology can strengthen the effectiveness of well-functioning teams and re-align teams where there is divergence of options or inconsistency in practice.
